March 2007 - Liz O'Neill, alumnae, dies in the Garuda plane crash in Indonesia.

Liz came to Barat-Burn in Year 3 with her older sister, Kate in year 6. Her mother is an alumna of our school in Aberdeen (no longer exists) and of Craiglockhart College, Edinburgh. She worked with JRS for a time and in Hong Kong. In the Department of Foreign Affairs she rose to the position of Counsellor which was the position she occupied in Indonesia. Before that Liz served in Sydney, Canberra and Japan. She received an OAM for her services and the Australian Service Medal for her work in the Solomons.
At a period between working in these different countries Liz did a year
of intensive language study. As was reported she did more for Australian Indonesian relations that any visit of a Minister. This was partly due to her ability to speak the language and so communicate with the Indonesian people. Words which sum her up seem to be compassionate and a woman of great integrity.
Liz, 37-year-old was wife to Wayne Adams and mother to nine-month-old Lucinda.
Alumnae and friends offer their condolences and prayers to the families of Liz.
